Union for Reform Judaism

SATURDAY, JULY 11 - All the campers have gone home and the staff is getting some well-deserved rest. On the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday prior to departure on Wednesday, all campers received a “once-over” from our nursing staff checking for fever, symptoms, lice, etc. We wanted to try and send everyone home with no “bugs”. We hope that everyone had a great trip home and that we’ll see y’all again soon.

UPDATE THURSDAY, JULY 2 - Niviim and Kohanim have already been on their field trips and Melachim will go this evening. We are all getting ready for the big 4th of July program in a few days.

On the health front, we have had one new case of Influenza A diagnosed since the last update. That brings our total to 10. We are still keeping a very close eye on the situation.

The weather has cooled off a bit, although it will be getting hotter over the next few days, according to the weatherman. We continue to keep a close watch on that, as well. We continue to make sure the campers (and staff!) are drinking enough water as well as wearing hats and sunscreen.

UPDATE MONDAY, JUNE 29 - Bruceville, Texas, is HOT. In spite of the heat, we are having a great time. On Shabbat, we moved many of our activities indoors because of the temperature. We kept everyone cool and hydrated.

Most of our campers and staff received their last dose of Tamiflu yesterday (Sunday, June 28). There have been no new cases diagnosed since the last update.

We want to thank all of the medical personnel who have been a part of our team effort over the past week:
Michelle Hauser MD
Cindy Bourgeois RN
Avery Herman RN
Cindy Reiner RN
Lisa Levitus RN
Sarah Blair EMT
Becca Levine, Infirmary Aide

UPDATE FRIDAY, JUNE 26 - Part Two - Tonight is the second Shabbat of the session. The Bonim A campers went home this morning, and we are expecting our new Bonim B campers to arrive on Sunday, along with our new Medical staff and our new Faculty members from your congregations. It has gotten very hot down here in Bruceville, and we are making a real effort to keep our campers cool, well hydrated, and happy.

To bring you up to date on the latest news on the flu front:
During the first almost two weeks of camp, we have had two confirmed cases of N1H1 and an additional six suspected cases. One of the two confirmed cases is “Novel” or Swine flu. The other is “Seasonal” or Human flu. Our understanding is that those who have received this season’s flu shot may be protected from the “human” variant. We will continue to treat the camp preventively for the “swine” variant until the ten-day course ends on Sunday.

We hope that all of you have a relaxing weekend and we will be back in touch next week with more news and info from GFC. In the meantime, make sure that you read the 'G-Frog-C' blog on our website and stay tuned for all of the pictures appearing on bunk1.com.

UPDATE FRIDAY, JUNE 26 - Up until today, there hasn’t been much to report. We have picked up three additional cases, one of which occurred in a camper who was not on the preventative treatment. We now have a total of eight cases of influenza A, two confirmed. One of the affected campers is already back at GFC after the mandated 7-day period at home.

UPDATE TUESDAY, JUNE 23 - Maccabiah came to a close last night ( Tzhov , Yellow, won overall) and the whole camp came together for the traditional Jessica dance. We have had no new flu cases or issues in the past 48 hours. As always, we will send an email to all current camper parents, as well as update this website, should the situation change.

UPDATE SUNDAY, JUNE 21 - Hello from GFC. We just started Maccabiah (check out the Bunk1 photos and the website video). Make sure you are tuning in to the blog by “G Frog C” on our home page.

The good news for now is that we have had no new flu cases in the past 24 hours. That keeps our total at 5 cases. All five campers have returned home to their families and may return to camp after the period suggested by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The campers and staff received their third round of anti-viral agents today at lunch. We have refined and re-refined our distribution system to be more efficient with the help of pharmacist Ken Goodman of Beth-El Congregation in Ft Worth. We have formalized our triage and treatment plans under the direction of Dr. Kathryn Levy of Temple Emanuel Dallas.

We want to thank all of the medical personnel who have been a part of our team effort over the past week:
Kathryn Levy MD
Dana Remer MD
Charles Pryzant MD
Bertta Herstein RN
Cindy Bourgeois RN
Avery Herman RN
Heidi Levenson RN
Ken Goodman, Pharmacist

Becca Levine, Infirmary Aide
Iris Berman-Smith, Infirmary Aide

UPDATE SATURDAY, JUNE 20 - As we continue to celebrate Shabbat here at Greene Family Camp, we want to update our families as to our current health and care issues. Since camp began there have been only four confirmed cases of the flu. Currently campers and staff, with the permission of their parents, are being treated with prophylaxis to help alleviate future outbreaks. We just gave our second dose today at lunch.

We have a wonderful health care staff that has been caring for the campers and making sure that they are comfortable.

While the health of the campers who are currently ill is of utmost importance to us, it is also important for our families to know that we continue to provide your children with a great camp experience.

Please visit our website,www.greene.urjcamps.org\health, for updates as to the status of our current health and care issues.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: PLEASE READ AND RESPOND

Dear GFC parents,

Opening day has come and gone. The first few days of camp have been wonderful. Bunks got to spend a significant amount of time together, getting to know one another and their staff. Tuesday was the first day of regular camp activities, and things are going very well. The evenings have even been cool and breezy.

We are writing to inform you that one child at camp recently exhibited flu-like symptoms and tested positive for influenza A and it is H1N1 (also known as swine flu). The sick child is in the infirmary and is being treated by our camp physician and doing well. It is our standard practice to notify camper families when these types of situations arise.

Our medical staff has been in contact with the Waco-McLennan Public Health District and we have followed isolation and infection control recommendations to prevent further exposure of campers and staff.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends the use of antiviral medications for the treatment and prevention of Influenza Type A. The State of Texas has graciously agreed to make available to our camp doses of Tamiflu to prevent further spread of flu in our community.

To most effectively halt further transmission of this virus we hope to administer Tamiflu on a preventative basis to all campers and staff. Though Tamiflu can be associated with some mild symptoms such as headache or nausea, it is generally well tolerated. Additional information concerning this medication can be obtained at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/antiviral.htm.

In order to preventively treat your camper, we need you to respond immediately. Go to https://urjyouth.wufoo.com/forms/parent-permission-to-treat/ and fill out the brief permission slip. We need you to do so prior to 5:00 PM TODAY, Thursday, June 18, 2009. Please consult with your child’s physician if you have additional questions. Questions for us at camp may be directed to ngreene@urj.org (“Nurse Greene”). We will be able to respond more easily to your questions if you email camp rather than call camp. The McLennan County Health District has also set up a special number for your questions staffed by their nursing personnel. The number is 254-750-5460. Updated info about this situation will be available at www.greene.urjcamps.org/health as they become available.

We are really looking forward to the next few weeks. Maccabiah begins on Saturday night (it’s a SECRET) and the entire camp will get caught up in the energy of teams red, green, blue and yellow.

Please respond TODAY by going to the link above and filling out the form so that we can begin to treat your children.

Sincerely,

Loui Dobin
Director
